Divorce at its heart is necessary surgery. It is best to cut along the proper moral and financial fault lines. The best surgeons cut the least. 

Invariably there is some pain involved. Quality representation, while it won't eliminate the pain, can help minimize it. It can help get you what you have coming, or protect you from losing too much.

How your divorce goes depends, however, not only on the skill of your lawyer but on three critical relationships: the relationship between you and your lawyer, between you and your soon-to-be-ex-spouse, and, between opposing counsel.

The relationship I strive for with all my clients is one of clear communication, accessibility, and frank assessment. I will give you my take on the odds of any given outcome and will advise you whether the result will justify the dollars spent. Every divorce is different and I will treat you, and your situation with the respect its uniqueness deserves.

How things are between you and your spouse will substantially influence, if not flat out determine, how the divorce will go. If there is mutual respect and courtesy, then splitsville will likely be as painless as it can get. One or both parties out for blood? Then that degree of enmity will likely be reflected in the process. Often, in the course of the divorce, changes of attitude occur. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

A professional and courteous relationship between opposing counsel can counterbalance interspousal enmity and, if the lawyer/client relationship is strong on each side, assist the divorce to a fair and functional conclusion. However, when the other side is unreasonable...float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.
